Faulty charge port door actuator
The small motor or solenoid that opens the charge port flap, or that locks and releases the charging connector, has failed.
Two jobs get done by mechanisms in this area and they are worth keeping apart, because one is an inconvenience and the other strands people. Opening the flap is convenience: if it fails, most vehicles will still open it from the touchscreen, the key or the phone app, and many have a mechanical push-to-open backing. Releasing the connector is not, because the cable is deliberately locked in while charging — a DC connector may be carrying hundreds of amps and separating one under load draws a damaging arc. When the release fails, the cable stays in the car.
So the practical advice differs completely depending on which has failed, and the first question is whether the flap will not open or the cable will not come out.
For the second, almost every electric vehicle provides a manual release — usually a cord or lever reached from inside the boot, or through a panel behind the inlet. It is worth finding in the handbook before it is needed; discovering it exists while standing at a motorway charger is considerably less useful.
The causes are ordinary for a small outdoor mechanism: ice, road salt, grit in the travel, a seized actuator, or water in its connector. In freezing weather a latch frozen shut is common and is not a failure at all — warming the area releases it, and forcing it does real damage.
