What to do

The car will drive and charge. Watch for reduced power or slower charging in hot weather, which is what a half-cooled pack produces. Check the cabin-side intake for the battery cooling system and clear anything blocking it — on many cars it is behind a rear seat or in the boot, and blocking it with luggage is a common and free-to-fix cause.

What this code means

The sense circuit for the second traction battery cooling fan is faulty.

A sense circuit is not a control circuit, and the difference is the whole value of this code. The control circuit commands the fan. The sense circuit is the fan reporting back — usually as a pulse train from the motor, whose frequency states how fast it is actually turning.

That feedback is what catches a fan that has been told to run and has not. Without it, a seized fan is invisible: the module commands it, sees no fault on the command, and believes the pack is being cooled. The pack then overheats and derates, and the fault presents as a battery that has lost power in hot weather — several steps removed from a fan nobody looked at.

A second fan implies a pack big enough to need two, which is worth noting because it also means losing one is a partial failure rather than a total one: cooling continues at half capacity, so the symptoms are mild, seasonal, and easy to attribute to something else.

The signal comes and goes. On a fan circuit this is often the fan itself — a motor with a worn commutator or a failing bearing produces an erratic feedback signal before it stops altogether, so this can be the earliest warning available.
