Hybrid Battery Cooling Fan

The fan that cools the traction battery — on most hybrids the pack's entire cooling system, drawing cabin air through an intake grille near a rear seat, pushing it through the pack and out. That intake placement is the part's whole story: it sits at floor level in a lived-in compartment and inhales dust, carpet fibre and pet hair for years, so the commonest fault is not the fan failing but the fan choking — a rotor packed with felt, dragging at a fraction of its design speed. Heat is what ages battery packs, which makes cleaning this fan one of the cheapest life-extending jobs in the hybrid range and skipping it one of the quiet ways packs get written off early. A fan heard running long after the car is locked is the other failure direction, and a flat twelve-volt battery in the morning is its bill.

Also known as: battery cooling fan, battery fan, hv battery fan, pack cooling fan, hybrid battery blower, battery cooling blower

Information, not instruction

CarGeek is a reference, not a service manual. Its pages are written from public sources and from what other people have found, never from a manufacturer's own service information, so they can be wrong or incomplete for your particular vehicle. Some of what they describe carries real risk: high voltage, fuel under pressure, stored energy, hot and moving parts.

Have anything you intend to act on checked by a trained person against the manufacturer's own procedure for your vehicle. Nothing here replaces that procedure.

Nothing posted about this yet. Whatever you found is worth writing down — even a dead end saves someone the same afternoon.

What makes one worth reading:

  • The car — make, model, year and engine. The same fault behaves differently on each.
  • What you measured, not only what you replaced.
  • What actually fixed it — or that nothing did, which is worth knowing too.
