The car drives normally and you will probably notice nothing — which is the point, because this system exists to warn people outside the vehicle, and pedestrians who cannot see you rely on it. It is a legal requirement on modern electric vehicles and an inspection failure in many places. The speaker is usually behind the front bumper and corrosion is the common cause, so the repair is often inexpensive.

What this code means

The pedestrian alert control module's circuit is faulty.

This is the system that makes an electric car audible at low speed, and it is the only code in the corpus whose whole purpose is the safety of somebody outside the vehicle.

An electric car at walking pace is close to silent, and that turned out to matter far more than anyone expected. Pedestrians judge traffic by ear constantly and without thinking about it, and blind and partially sighted people depend on it entirely. The research that followed found quiet vehicles measurably more likely to be involved in low-speed pedestrian collisions, which is why it is now regulated rather than optional: UN Regulation 138 in Europe and FMVSS 141 in the United States both require an acoustic vehicle alerting system below roughly 20 km/h, where tyre and wind noise have not yet taken over.

So a fault here is a legal and safety matter rather than a comfort one. The car drives perfectly, nothing inside it is affected, and the driver may never notice — which is exactly the problem, because the people the system protects are not in the car. It is also an inspection failure in jurisdictions that test for it.

The speaker lives in the front bumper or the wheel arch, which is the most hostile location on the vehicle: spray, salt, kerbing and pressure washers. Corrosion and water ingress account for most of these, and the fix is usually cheap.
