P0DFB: Generator Position Exceeding Learn Limit

What to do

The car will drive with reduced hybrid performance and may use noticeably more fuel. If it has recently had motor, generator or inverter work, say so — a skipped or failed calibration is by far the commonest cause, and it is a procedure rather than a part.

What this code means

The generator position offset the car learned is outside the range it will accept.

An electric machine's position sensor has to be aligned to the rotor's magnets, and that alignment is measured on the vehicle rather than set at the factory.

The inverter energises the windings in a sequence timed to where the rotor actually is. Get the offset between the sensor's zero and the rotor's magnetic zero wrong, and the machine still turns — it simply does everything less well: less torque for the same current, more heat, worse efficiency. Nothing breaks, which is exactly what makes it dangerous as a fault.

So the offset is learned in a service procedure, and replacing the machine, the sensor or the inverter invalidates it. The corpus makes the same point about the drive motor at P0C17, and the warning there is the one that matters here too: a car that has had work done and now feels flat, hot and thirsty has usually had a learn procedure skipped, and replacing the new part again invalidates it a second time.

This is the procedure completing and producing an answer that cannot be right, which is the more informative of the two failures. A learned offset far from where it should be means either the sensor is genuinely misaligned — a resolver not seated, a rotor fitted a tooth out — or the sensor is faulty and the procedure faithfully learned nonsense.

Do not simply run it again until it passes. A learn that produces a wildly wrong number twice is telling you something mechanical, and accepting a value inside the limit by chance would leave the machine permanently mistimed.
