Motor Generator
Does two jobs by the same means: drives the wheels as a motor, and generates electricity when driven, whether by the engine or by the car's own momentum under braking. Most hybrids carry two, one biased to each role. It is also what starts the engine — a hybrid has no starter motor, which is why the engine appears rather than cranks, and why a code reporting that the engine failed to start on a hybrid is never a starter fault. That leaves the ordinary engine suspects: fuel, spark, compression.
