P0EA6: DC/DC Converter B Over Temperature
What to do
The car drives normally and the backup converter is compromised. Ask for both converters to be checked, not just the one named — a backup running hot is sometimes covering for the main one.
What this code means
The second DC/DC converter has exceeded its temperature limit.
A second DC/DC converter is a safety measure, not capacity, and that is the opposite of the second charger at P0E85.
Consider what runs on twelve volts in a modern electric car. Electric power steering. Brake assistance, and on many vehicles brake-by-wire with no direct mechanical path from pedal to caliper. The modules that hold the traction contactors closed. Lose the twelve-volt supply at seventy miles an hour and the car does not simply stop being convenient.
A twelve-volt battery alone is not an adequate backup, because a small lead-acid battery under a bonnet may be five years old and nobody tests it. So a second converter carries the load if the first fails, and the car keeps its steering and its brakes while it comes to a controlled stop.
Which makes a fault here different from every other DC/DC code in the corpus. Nothing changes for the driver — the first converter is doing everything. What has gone is the redundancy, and the car is now one failure away from the situation the second converter exists to prevent. That is why this deserves attention despite having no symptoms, and why it is the wrong code to defer until something noticeable happens.
Over temperature on a backup converter has a cause worth naming: it may be doing more work than it should. A second converter that is running hot is often one that has quietly taken over some of the load because the first is underperforming — so this code can be the first evidence of a fault in converter A rather than in B. Read both before deciding which unit is the problem.
The ordinary cause is cooling, and the warning from P0D24 applies unchanged: a new unit fitted to a car with an air lock or a stopped pump overheats in its turn.
