P0D32: DC/DC Converter A Over Temperature

What to do

The car will drive. Watch for the 12-volt battery going flat over the following days — that is this fault's real symptom, and replacing the battery will not fix it. Have the cooling system checked as well as the converter.

What this code means

The DC/DC converter has exceeded its temperature limit.

The DC/DC converter is the alternator's replacement, and the point is made in full at P0C38: an electric car has no alternator, so everything that runs on 12 volts — lights, wipers, the radio, every control module — is fed by a converter stepping the traction pack down. When it stops, the 12-volt battery is on its own and the car dies within hours.

Over temperature is the polite version of that failure. The converter does not stop; it derates, reducing its output until it cools. So the car keeps working, and the 12-volt battery quietly stops being fully charged. The symptom arrives days later as a flat battery on a car whose traction pack is full — which is exactly the presentation that gets a perfectly good 12-volt battery replaced.

A converter that overheats in ordinary conditions has a cooling fault, not a converter fault, and the same warning applies as at P0D24: a new unit in a car with a cooling problem overheats too.
