P0D24: Battery Charger A Temperature Too High

What to do

The car will charge, but slowly, and may slow further as it goes. If this only happens in hot weather at maximum current it is the system protecting itself. If it happens in mild weather or every session, the charger's cooling needs checking before the charger does.

What this code means

The on-board charger has exceeded its temperature limit.

Charging makes heat, and a lot of it. A 7 kW charger running at 95% efficiency is still dissipating something like 350 watts inside a sealed box under the car — comparable to a small fan heater, with no airflow of its own. So chargers are liquid-cooled or heatsinked into the structure, and they derate: when they get too hot they reduce current rather than shut down.

That derating is the reason this code is often not a fault at all. A car parked in full sun charging at maximum current on a hot afternoon may reach the limit legitimately, slow itself down, and store this. What makes it a fault is when it happens in mild weather, or every time, or on a car that used to manage the same charge without complaint.

When it is a fault, the cause is nearly always cooling rather than the charger: the charger coolant valve, air trapped in the circuit, or a pump that has stopped. Fitting a new charger to a car with a cooling fault overheats the new one too.
