P20BA: Reductant Heater A Control Circuit Performance

What to do

Ask which part of the system heater A is on this vehicle — the tank, a line, or the injector. The letter is not the same across manufacturers, and the answer decides whether this is a cheap repair or an expensive one.

Ask for the connectors under the vehicle to be checked before any part is replaced. These heaters run the length of the underbody where salt and water reach them, and corrosion is a common cause.

Get it repaired before deep winter. In warm weather nothing happens at all — the fault only bites when the fluid actually freezes, and by then the emissions countdown has started.

Be aware that heated reductant lines are often a single sealed assembly, so a failed line heater can mean replacing the whole line. Worth asking about before agreeing.

What this code means

The first reductant heater circuit is being commanded but not performing as expected.

A reductant system carries several heaters, not one, and knowing why makes this family of four codes make sense. Freezing fluid anywhere in the path stops the system, so every part of that path is heated separately: the tank, the supply line, the return line, and the metering unit or injector. They are lettered A, B, C and D.

Which one is which varies between manufacturers, so the letter should be resolved against this vehicle's own documentation rather than assumed. Heater A is most commonly the tank, being the largest thermal mass and the first thing that must thaw.

Performance means commanded but ineffective, which points at the heating rather than the wiring:

  • A partly failed element, drawing some current and producing insufficient heat.
  • A temperature sensor misreporting, so the module misjudges an adequately heated section.
  • On coolant-heated systems, a diverter valve or an airlock starving that section of heat.

Line heaters are usually resistive wire wrapped along the hose and moulded into it, which has a consequence worth knowing: they are rarely serviceable separately. A failed line heater usually means a complete heated line assembly, and those are surprisingly expensive.

Check the connectors before accepting that. These run under the vehicle through the full range of salt, water and stone damage.
