P05F8: Reductant Heater Control Module Performance

What to do

Ask whether individual reductant heater faults are stored alongside this one. If they are, this module is very likely the single cause of all of them rather than several separate failures — which is a much smaller repair than it first appears.

Ask for the module's power supply and earth to be checked, not just the module. It switches heavy current, and a corroded high-current connection reads exactly like a failed module.

Ask for the heaters themselves to be measured before a replacement module is fitted, since a shorted heater can destroy the module's output — and a new one meets the same short.

Get it done before deep winter. In mild weather you will notice nothing at all, and the first hard frost starts a countdown towards the vehicle refusing to restart.

What this code means

The module that drives the reductant heaters is not performing as expected.

A reductant system carries several heaters — tank, supply line, return line and metering unit — and on many vehicles a dedicated module drives them all. Understanding that changes where this fault is looked for: it is upstream of every individual heater code, so it can produce several of them at once.

The module's own failures are ordinary for what it does:

  • Supply and earth. It switches heavy current, so its feed and earth are as important as the module itself, and a corroded high-current joint reads as a module fault.
  • Water ingress. These are mounted low, near the tank, in the road spray.
  • An internal output stage failed, often taken out by a shorted heater element — so measure the heaters before fitting a replacement, or the new module meets the same short.

The consequence is seasonal and silent. Nothing happens in warm weather. The first hard frost produces frozen reductant, no dosing, and the inducement countdown towards a vehicle that will not restart.
