Expect emissions-related codes rather than an obvious driving problem, though the engine may feel slightly flat. Ask for the EGR throttle to be inspected for carbon as well as its circuit tested — it sits in the exhaust gas path and cokes up faster than anything else in the intake.

What this code means

The circuit controlling the EGR throttle reads below its valid range, normally a short to ground.

Why a recirculation system needs a throttle of its own is worth setting out, because the part puzzles people who reasonably assume a diesel has no throttle at all. Exhaust gas recirculation works on pressure difference: exhaust flows into the intake because exhaust pressure is higher. On a modern turbocharged engine at low load that difference can shrink almost to nothing — an efficient turbo raises intake pressure while exhaust pressure stays modest — and at that point EGR simply will not flow however far the valve opens.

The answer is a throttle plate in the intake that closes slightly to create the depression needed. It is not there to control power, and it never closes far. Its job is to manufacture a pressure difference so that recirculation can happen at all.

That explains the symptom pattern: an EGR throttle fault usually presents as EGR flow codes — insufficient flow, or the valve position not achieving what was asked — rather than as a power complaint. The throttle is upstream of the problem the module actually reports.

It also sits directly in the path of recirculated exhaust, so it accumulates carbon considerably faster than the main throttle does.
