Ask for the charging system to be checked before this module is replaced. Overvoltage almost always comes from the alternator, and fitting a new module while the charging system still overcharges will damage the new one too.

Ask whether other modules have reported supply faults. If several have, that confirms the alternator rather than this module — and it is one repair instead of several.

Mention if the battery has needed replacing more often than seems reasonable. Overcharging quietly ruins batteries, and that history supports the same diagnosis.

Mention any lights that seem unusually bright, particularly at higher engine speeds, which is a classic sign of overcharging.

What this code means

The reductant control module is receiving more voltage than it should.

Overvoltage is rarer than undervoltage and more damaging, which is why it gets its own code. A module starved of voltage misbehaves; a module fed too much degrades. Electrolytic capacitors, output drivers and regulators all have limits, and exceeding them repeatedly shortens their life whether or not anything fails today.

The charging system is the cause in the overwhelming majority of cases, and that is where the diagnosis should start:

  • A failed voltage regulator, letting the alternator run at whatever it will produce. This affects the whole vehicle, so expect other modules to complain too — a page of overvoltage codes across unrelated systems is charging, not modules.
  • A failed communication link on a regulated alternator, so it defaults to a fixed high output rather than the commanded one.
  • A poor earth, which raises the module's reference and makes a correct supply look high from inside it.

Read every stored code before touching this module. If other modules report supply faults too, the alternator is the fault and this is a symptom — and replacing this module while the charging system still overcharges destroys the replacement.

Check the battery too. Overcharging boils electrolyte and shortens battery life quietly, so a vehicle that has been through several batteries alongside this code is telling a consistent story.
