What to do
Note whether it happens when the vehicle is warm, or after a certain distance — that pattern points at a connection that opens as it heats up, which is common on this sensor and hard to find any other way. Ask for the connector and the harness underneath to be inspected rather than the sensor replaced on suspicion; the environment down there causes more of these faults than the sensor does, and the sensor is the expensive half.
What this code means
The NOx sensor signal drops out or jumps rather than varying smoothly.
Location does most of the explaining here. This sensor and its connector live underneath the vehicle, attached to an exhaust that heats to several hundred degrees and cools again on every journey, while being sprayed with water, salt and grit from below. Few components on a car endure a harsher combination, and the failure modes follow directly from it: connector seals that harden and admit moisture, terminals that corrode, and wiring that has work-hardened where it passes a heat cycle boundary and eventually cracks inside intact-looking insulation.
That last one is worth naming because it defeats casual inspection. A wire that looks perfect can be broken inside its sheath, making contact when cold and parting as it expands — which produces a fault that appears only once the vehicle is warm, and disappears by the time it is on a ramp.
Because these sensors communicate digitally rather than as a varying voltage, an intermittent fault here often presents as the sensor vanishing from the bus and returning, rather than as a noisy reading. That is a useful signature: a sensor that is present or absent rather than erratic points at the connection rather than at the element.
