P2212: NOx Sensor Heater Sense Circuit Intermittent Bank 1 Sensor 1

What to do

The car drives normally. Note whether the fault appears only once warm or after a certain distance, and ask for the connector and harness to be inspected rather than the sensor replaced — on an intermittent fault in this location the connection is the more likely culprit, and the sensor is the expensive one.

What this code means

The heater sense reading jumps or drops out rather than changing smoothly.

A heated ceramic element has real thermal mass, so its temperature — and therefore its resistance — cannot change abruptly. Any step the module sees is electrical, and on a low-current measurement line in this location that means a connection rather than a component. The environment and the failure modes are those described at P2204, and so is the useful advice: note when it happens, because a fault that appears only once the vehicle is warm is a connection opening as it expands, and that will not be present on a cold car in a workshop.

Information, not instruction

CarGeek is a reference, not a service manual. Its pages are written from public sources and from what other people have found, never from a manufacturer's own service information, so they can be wrong or incomplete for your particular vehicle. Some of what they describe carries real risk: high voltage, fuel under pressure, stored energy, hot and moving parts.

Have anything you intend to act on checked by a trained person against the manufacturer's own procedure for your vehicle. Nothing here replaces that procedure.

Nothing posted about this yet. Whatever you found is worth writing down — even a dead end saves someone the same afternoon.

What makes one worth reading:

  • The car — make, model, year and engine. The same fault behaves differently on each.
  • What you measured, not only what you replaced.
  • What actually fixed it — or that nothing did, which is worth knowing too.
