What to do

Do not agree to an SCR catalyst replacement while this code is stored. This sensor is what the catalyst is judged by — reading low, it makes a perfectly good catalyst look like it has failed, and fitting a new one sets the same fault again within days. It is the most expensive mistake available in this system.

Ask for the exhaust to be checked for leaks ahead of the sensor, which dilutes the sample and reads low with a healthy sensor.

Mention whether the engine uses oil, and what kind of journeys the car does. Both contaminate this sensor — and a replacement fitted into the same exhaust will age the same way, so the cause matters as much as the part.

Expect the emissions system to escalate if left, since real pollution is passing through unconverted.

What this code means

The upstream NOx sensor is reporting less nitrogen oxide than the engine is actually producing.

This is the more consequential half of the biased pair, and the reason is worth stating plainly: it convicts an innocent catalyst.

The dosing calculation is built on this sensor. Reading low, it makes the system under-dose — so real nitrogen oxide passes through the SCR catalyst unconverted, and the downstream sensor faithfully reports it. The module compares the two, computes a poor conversion rate, and concludes the catalyst has failed.

A vehicle can therefore arrive with an SCR efficiency code, get an expensive catalyst fitted, and set the same code again within days — because the fault was always the sensor in front of it.

Which is why an efficiency code and a sensor performance code stored together should always be read sensor-first.

The causes are ordinary sensor ones, and one deserves particular attention because it is preventable and often repeats: soot and oil contamination of the element. An engine burning oil, or a vehicle used only for short journeys where the sensor never reaches proper temperature, coats the element and dulls it. A replacement fitted into the same exhaust ages the same way.

Check for an exhaust leak upstream as well — air entering before the sensor dilutes the sample and reads low for entirely mechanical reasons.
