P2262: Turbocharger/Supercharger Boost Pressure A Not Detected — Mechanical

What to do

Expect a marked loss of power; the engine will run and drive but feel very flat, and many vehicles limit power deliberately in this condition. Ask for a boost leak test before agreeing to any turbocharger work. A split hose or a pipe off its stub produces this exact code with a perfectly healthy turbo, costs very little, and is found in minutes with a pressure test. On a diesel, ask also whether the variable vanes are seized with carbon — they can often be cleaned rather than replaced. A turbocharger is the most expensive of the possible answers and should be the last one reached, not the first.

What this code means

The module commanded boost, no boost appeared, and every electrical circuit tested correctly. That is what the "mechanical" qualifier means, and it is doing real diagnostic work: the sensors, solenoids and wiring are all reporting normally, so the fault is physical.

The cheapest cause is also one of the most common, and it is the one to eliminate first. A boost leak — a split hose, a pipe pushed off its stub, a failed clamp, a cracked intercooler end tank — lets compressed air escape before it reaches the engine. The turbo is working perfectly and the pressure simply never arrives. These are inexpensive parts and a pressure test of the intake system finds them in minutes, which is why a boost leak test should come before any quote for a turbocharger.

The remaining causes, roughly cheapest first:

  • Variable-geometry vanes seized with carbon, on a diesel. The mechanism that varies the turbine's geometry lives in exhaust soot, and on a car used for short journeys it gums up. Sometimes it can be freed and cleaned rather than replaced.
  • A wastegate stuck open, venting exhaust past the turbine so it never spins up.
  • A collapsed or blocked intake or intercooler, restricting flow.
  • A failed turbocharger — worn bearings, damaged wheel, or a shaft that has seized.

That last one is the expensive answer and is genuinely last on the list. The pattern worth guarding against is a turbo being quoted on the strength of this code alone, because the code says only that boost did not arrive — it does not say why, and three of the four explanations above are considerably cheaper than the fourth.
