P2562: Turbocharger Boost Control Position Sensor A Circuit
What to do
Expect the engine to feel flat and to run out of puff, possibly with a reduced power warning. This is not usually damaging, so driving gently to somewhere it can be looked at is reasonable, but it will not improve on its own.
Before agreeing to a replacement turbocharger, read P2563. This family of codes names the turbo, and the turbo is very often mechanically perfect — the sensor, the actuator that moves the vanes, and carbon binding the vane mechanism are all far commoner and far cheaper. Ask for those to be ruled out first, in that order.
What this code means
A fault in the circuit of the sensor reporting the position of the turbocharger's boost control mechanism.
On most modern diesels that mechanism is a ring of moveable vanes inside the turbine housing, and understanding what they do explains why their position needs measuring at all.
A turbocharger is a compromise between two sizes. A small turbine spins up quickly at low engine speed but chokes the exhaust higher up; a large one flows freely at high speed and does nothing until the engine is working hard. A variable-geometry turbocharger avoids choosing. The vanes swivel to narrow the passage at low speed — accelerating the exhaust gas onto the turbine so it spins early, giving the response of a small turbo — and swing open as the engine speeds up, behaving like a large one. One turbocharger doing the job of two, which is why most diesels have no wastegate: the vanes do the regulating that a wastegate would.
The position sensor closes the loop. The module commands a vane position, the sensor reports where the vanes actually went, and the difference is what allows precise boost control instead of guesswork. Without a trustworthy position signal the module cannot control boost, so it does the safe thing — it commands the vanes to a default position, usually fully open, and accepts low boost rather than risk overboosting the engine.
Hence the usual complaint: a diesel that has gone flat, with the fault light on. The turbo is not necessarily damaged; the module has simply stopped trusting the feedback and given up on control. What that means for the repair — and why it is so often the most expensive possible answer that gets chosen — is at P2563.
