P2539: Low Pressure Fuel System Sensor Circuit
What to do
The car may drive normally at first. This is worth dealing with promptly for a reason that is not obvious: this sensor watches the fuel supply feeding the high-pressure pump, and starving that pump is what destroys it — after which metal debris contaminates the injectors and lines too, turning a modest repair into a whole fuel system. Ask for the fuel filter and the in-tank pump's delivery to be checked as well as the sensor; both are far cheaper than the pump they protect. Worth asking too whether the sensor is separate or part of the pump assembly, since that changes the job substantially.
What this code means
A fault in the circuit of the sensor monitoring the low-pressure side of the fuel system.
This sensor exists to protect the most expensive part of the fuel system, and understanding that is what makes the code worth acting on rather than filing.
Modern fuel systems work in two stages. An in-tank pump delivers fuel at modest pressure — a few bar — to a high-pressure pump on the engine, which raises it to the extreme figures direct injection and common-rail diesel require. The two are not independent: the high-pressure pump depends entirely on being fed properly, and the corpus states the consequence in the pump's own vocabulary entry — running one short of fuel is how it destroys itself, and the resulting metal debris contaminates the whole fuel system.
So the low-pressure sensor is watching for the condition that destroys the high-pressure pump, early enough to matter. A restricted filter, a tired in-tank pump or a partially blocked supply line reduces feed pressure long before the engine complains, and every one of those is a fraction of the price of the pump it starves.
It is also part of a control loop rather than only a monitor. Older systems ran the lift pump flat out and returned the surplus to the tank, which wastes energy and warms the fuel. Modern ones vary the pump to deliver only what is needed, and this sensor is the feedback that makes that possible. A fault therefore also removes the module's ability to regulate the pump, and the fallback is usually to run it at full output — which works, but heats the fuel and shortens the pump's life.
Before the sensor, the ordinary suspects: the connector, the wiring, and on many vehicles the sensor is part of the pump assembly, which changes the repair considerably and is worth establishing before parts are ordered.
