Get this checked before driving further rather than carrying on and seeing. It often means the fuel supply feeding the high-pressure pump genuinely is inadequate, and running that pump underfed is what wrecks it — after which its metal debris contaminates the injectors and lines, which is one of the most expensive repairs a modern engine can need. Ask for the fuel filter first; it is a service item, frequently overdue, and the likeliest cause by a wide margin. Ask for pressure to be measured under load rather than at idle, since a marginal supply looks fine at rest.

What this code means

The low-pressure fuel reading is electrically valid but does not match what the module commanded or expects.

This is the variant most likely to be reporting a genuinely inadequate fuel supply rather than a sensor fault, which makes it the important one in the family. The mechanism is at P2539: feed pressure below what the high-pressure pump needs starves it, and a starved high-pressure pump destroys itself and then contaminates everything downstream with its own debris.

The causes are ordered by cost and the cheapest is genuinely the most common.

  • A restricted fuel filter. A service item, frequently overdue, and the single likeliest answer.
  • A tired in-tank pump, which holds pressure at idle and cannot maintain it under demand — so the fault appears under load and vanishes at rest.
  • A partially blocked supply line or a collapsing hose, which behaves the same way.
  • A pump control module fault, on systems where the pump speed is regulated.

Marked not to be driven because unlike most sensor codes this one describes an ongoing risk to expensive hardware: every mile driven with the high-pressure pump underfed is wear that does not reverse, and the failure mode takes the injectors with it.

The measurement that settles it is fuel pressure on a gauge under load — not at idle, where a marginal supply looks perfectly adequate.
