Ask what the car was doing at the moment it stopped, because the answer sorts a very large list. Stalling at idle, stalling as you slow to a halt, stalling under load and stalling at random are four different faults that share one word.
Stalling at idle is idle control with no margin left — the engine cannot hold the lowest speed it is asked to hold, so anything that removes a little air or adds a little load finishes it. That is the same population as a rough or surging idle, one step further on: a fouled control valve, a sooted throttle body with a stale adaptation, or unmetered air the module cannot compensate for.
Stalling as you come to a stop on an automatic is not an engine fault at all, and it has its own entry in this vocabulary because the pattern is so recognisable: the torque converter's lock-up clutch has not released, so the stationary wheels drag the engine down through it — exactly as a manual stalls if you brake to a halt without the clutch. The engine restarts immediately and runs perfectly, which is part of the pattern.
Stalling with no warning at all, instantly, is the dangerous one and belongs to a different family — an intermittent crank position signal, a failing ignition switch, or a supply relay dropping out. It takes power steering and brake assist with it, and at speed that is a safety matter rather than an inconvenience.
And a stall that will not restart until the engine cools is a strong finding. Heat-dependent failures — a crank sensor, an ignition module, a fuel pump drawing more current as it warms — behave exactly that way, and a workshop test on a cold car will find nothing at all.
