P2638: Torque Management Feedback Signal A Range/Performance
What to do
The engine will feel normal; the gearchanges are what to watch. If shifts have started to feel soft, slurred or slow to complete — as though the gearbox is slipping briefly during the change — get it looked at rather than waiting. The transmission may be applying less clutch pressure than the shift needs because it has been given a torque figure that is wrong but believable, and repeated slipping wears clutches.
This is not a reason to overhaul a gearbox. It is a signalling fault between two modules, and fixing it usually means a connector or a length of wiring.
What this code means
The torque feedback signal is electrically valid and does not agree with the conditions — a reported torque that does not match engine speed, load and fuelling, or one that does not match what the same module reports over the data bus.
A wrong-but-plausible torque figure is handled considerably worse than a missing one, and that is the point of separating this variant. With no signal at all, the receiving modules know they are without it and adopt a documented fallback. With a believable number that happens to be false, they act on it: a transmission told the engine is producing less torque than it is will apply less clutch pressure than the shift needs, which is how a slipping shift becomes a worn clutch pack over time.
That makes this the variant in the family with a mechanical consequence rather than only a behavioural one, and the reason to treat it as more than a nuisance code.
