P2694: Cylinder 9 Injector Data Incompatible

As at P2690 — a calibration code is missing or does not match; nothing has failed mechanically.

One thing matters especially on an engine of this size, because reconditioned injectors are common: if any injector was remanufactured rather than bought new, the code stamped on its body is the wrong one. A rebuilt injector is flow-tested again and issued a fresh calibration code, supplied on the reconditioner's paperwork or their own label. Entering the original marking gives exactly this fault.

Ask whoever did the work which code they entered and where they read it from. And if the engine's injector history is unclear, ask for the whole set to be read back and checked against the labels actually on the injectors — on a high-hour engine the stored data may date from work done by somebody else years ago.

What this code means

The calibration data held for cylinder 9's injector does not match the injector fitted there, or is absent. The explanation of injector calibration codes is at P2690.

A cylinder 9 means a V10 or a large commercial or industrial engine, and that population changes what this code is likely to be attached to. These are not ordinary cars: heavy vehicles, plant, marine and generator installations, and a small number of V10 passenger vehicles.

Two things follow that are worth knowing.

Injectors on these engines are frequently reconditioned rather than replaced. A remanufactured injector is flow-tested after rebuild and issued with a new calibration code that has nothing to do with the one originally stamped on its body. So the label on the injector may be the old one, and entering it produces exactly this fault — the correct code is on the reconditioner's paperwork or their own label, and the original marking must be ignored. That is a trap with no equivalent on a vehicle running new parts.

And these engines often run very high hours between overhauls, so the module's stored data may predate several rounds of injector work by different people. Where the history is unclear, reading back and verifying the whole set against the physical labels is the only reliable position, rather than assuming what is stored is what is fitted.
