P2696: Injector Data Incompatible

What to do

This one is about the injector data as a whole rather than one cylinder, and the most useful question it raises is whether the injectors fitted are the right ones for your exact engine.

Many engines come in several power outputs from the same basic unit, with different injectors. They fit physically and are not interchangeable, and a parts lookup by model rather than by the exact engine variant can easily supply the wrong ones — at which point the module refuses the calibration data because it is the wrong type of data, not the wrong value.

Expect smoke, poor economy and reduced power meanwhile. Worth resolving reasonably promptly, since fuelling that is wrong across every cylinder tends to bring particulate filter problems along behind it.

Ask for the injector part numbers to be checked against your engine's exact variant, and — if the module has been reprogrammed or replaced — whether the software loaded matches that same variant. Those two questions cover most of these.

What this code means

The injector calibration data as a whole is incompatible with what the module expects — not a fault attributed to any one cylinder, but a problem with the set.

The per-cylinder codes say this injector's correction is wrong. This one says these are not the right kind of numbers, and the distinction points at a different set of causes.

What produces it:

  • Injectors of the wrong specification fitted. Many engines are sold in several power outputs from the same block, with different injectors and different nozzle flow rates. They interchange physically and they do not interchange functionally, and a parts lookup by registration or model alone will happily supply the wrong variant. The module rejects the calibration data because it belongs to an injector type this software does not expect.
  • Software that does not match the hardware. A module reflashed with a calibration for a different variant of the same engine, or an update applied to the wrong specification, produces the same mismatch from the opposite direction.
  • A module transplanted from another vehicle, carrying data for that vehicle's injectors.
  • Data entered in the wrong format. Calibration codes are written differently by different manufacturers — some hexadecimal, some with check characters — and entering them by a convention the module does not use gives values that are structurally invalid rather than merely wrong.

The question this code should prompt is therefore not "which injector" but "is this the right part for this engine". Checking the injector part numbers against the engine's exact variant — not the model, the variant — is the first move, and it is the one that finds the wrong-specification case before anybody spends time on the coding procedure.

The engine will usually run, because the module falls back to defaults, but fuelling is wrong across the board rather than in one cylinder: smoke, poor economy, reduced power, and a strong likelihood of particulate filter trouble downstream as a consequence rather than a cause.
