P2793: Gear Shift Direction Circuit
What to do
Expect refused or harsh gears rather than none at all, and be ready for limp mode. If the box drops to a single gear it is protecting itself, not failing further. Driving on briefly is usually safe, but a mechanism stranded between gears can leave you without drive without warning — treat the first refusal as the moment to book it in, not the tenth.
What this code means
The gear shift direction circuit has a fault.
This family is the shift axis — engaging a gear within the chosen gate — and its partner family two codes back drives the select axis.
An automated manual shifts with motors instead of your hand, and this circuit drives one of the two motions. Moving a gear lever is really two movements: select side to side to choose a gate, then shift fore and aft to engage a gear. An automated gearbox performs exactly the same mechanics with a gate select actuator for one axis and a gear shift actuator for the other, both commanded by the transmission control module.
A direction circuit fault can strand the mechanism mid-move, which is why this family bites harder than a request-switch fault. The box may end up between gears, refuse a particular gear while managing others, or stay in whatever it last engaged and limp. The pattern of which gears still work traces which axis is in trouble.
The actuator is the likeliest culprit, its wiring the cheapest. These motors live on the outside of the gearbox in engine-bay heat and road spray; their connectors corrode, their windings tire, their linkages stiffen. Prove the circuit at the connector before condemning the actuator, and prove the actuator before anyone opens the gearbox — the internals are innocent in almost every case.
