P0914: Gear Shift Position Circuit A

What to do

If the car ends up with no drive at all mid-change, revving freely as though in neutral, that is this half of the mechanism rather than the one that chooses gears. Say which it does — losing gears in groups and failing to engage at all point at different parts.

What this code means

A fault in the sensor reporting the gear shift position — the second of the two motions described under P0904. Where gate select chooses which plane of gears to work in, shift is the movement along that plane which actually engages one.

The symptom pattern is correspondingly different, and the difference is diagnostic. A select fault removes gears in groups, because a whole plane becomes unreachable. A shift fault removes the ability to engage whatever plane has been selected, so the gearbox reaches the right place and then fails to complete — which is what leaves an automated manual sitting in neutral between gears, revving with no drive, in a way an automatic simply cannot.

Information, not instruction

CarGeek is a reference, not a service manual. Its pages are written from public sources and from what other people have found, never from a manufacturer's own service information, so they can be wrong or incomplete for your particular vehicle. Some of what they describe carries real risk: high voltage, fuel under pressure, stored energy, hot and moving parts.

Have anything you intend to act on checked by a trained person against the manufacturer's own procedure for your vehicle. Nothing here replaces that procedure.

Nothing posted about this yet. Whatever you found is worth writing down — even a dead end saves someone the same afternoon.

What makes one worth reading:

  • The car — make, model, year and engine. The same fault behaves differently on each.
  • What you measured, not only what you replaced.
  • What actually fixed it — or that nothing did, which is worth knowing too.
