What to do

The car may lock into one gear — that is limp mode protecting the transmission, not the gearbox failing. It will drive, harshly, at reduced speed. Check the fluid if the car has a dipstick, and have the fault diagnosed before it is driven hard: wrong pressure wears clutches every mile it persists.

What this code means

Pressure control solenoid R's control circuit is reading high.

A constant high usually means a short to voltage or a broken feed leaving the line pulled up — either way the commanded current cannot flow, and the channel is effectively unpowered.

A pressure control solenoid is how the module pushes on the hydraulics. The valve body routes pressurised fluid to the clutches that make each gear, and these solenoids set that pressure — the module commands a current, the solenoid delivers a proportional pressure, and shift feel is that translation working exactly.

When it goes wrong, pressure is wrong, and pressure is everything. Too little and a clutch slips as it takes the load — heat, wear, and eventually the debris of its own friction material in the fluid. Too much and the clutch grabs — the bang-into-gear shift that feels violent and hammers the driveline. The module usually retreats to limp mode instead: one safe gear, harsh but survivable, protecting the gearbox at the cost of the journey.

The solenoid is not automatically the culprit. These valves are precision spools moved by small currents, and they are only as healthy as the fluid they sit in. Old, burnt or debris-laden fluid gums and scores them; a worn valve body leaks away the pressure they meter; a chafed harness or corroded connector corrupts the command before it arrives. Fluid condition first, then the electrical path, then the solenoid, then the valve body — in that order, because that is cost order too.

Solenoid replacement is often possible without removing the gearbox, depending on the vehicle — many live under the sump pan on the valve body. What matters more is answering why this one failed: a solenoid killed by contaminated fluid will be followed by its neighbours unless the fluid — and whatever is shedding into it — is dealt with.

The letter is the standard's name for a hydraulic channel, not a part number. Which physical solenoid this is, and which clutches its pressure serves, differs between transmissions — only the vehicle's own documentation maps the letter to the part. This family (N through T) extends the A-through-K set the corpus already carries; the standard allocated these later letters without base codes, so the family starts at its performance variant.
