What to do
Expect worse fuel economy and an emissions test failure; the car will drive normally. Ask for an exhaust leak check before the sensor is replaced — a leak upstream makes a perfectly good sensor read lazy, and it is far cheaper to find than to discover afterwards.
What this code means
The oxygen sensor on bank 1, position 2 is responding too slowly.
This is the lazy sensor code, and it is the one that finds a failing oxygen sensor before anything else does.
A healthy oxygen sensor is fast. In closed-loop running the mixture is deliberately swung slightly rich and slightly lean several times a second, and the sensor must follow every swing — that constant oscillation is how the module holds the average exactly where the catalyst works best. A sensor that responds slowly still reports the right average, so nothing looks wrong on a static reading.
But the fuel trim it produces is wrong in a way that costs money and catalysts. The module corrects late, so the mixture overshoots in both directions, and the catalyst — which needs the swing to be small — is asked to deal with excursions it was not designed for.
So the symptom is economy and emissions rather than driveability, and it arrives so gradually nobody can date it. A range/performance code on an oxygen sensor almost always means age: these are consumable parts with a service life measured in tens of thousands of miles, and they degrade rather than fail.
Two cheap things must be ruled out first, because both make a good sensor look lazy. An exhaust leak upstream draws in air and skews everything the sensor sees. And a vacuum leak does the same from the other end. Neither is the sensor, and both are commoner than a sensor that has genuinely worn out at low mileage.
Sensor 2 sits after the catalyst and does not control fuelling; it judges the catalyst. A lazy sensor here makes a healthy catalyst look failed, which is how a good catalytic converter gets replaced for the price of a sensor.
