What this code means
The particulate matter sensor's processor has failed its own performance check.
A particulate matter sensor is the only device on the car that measures soot leaving the exhaust directly, and it is a genuinely difficult instrument — which is why it has a processor of its own worth a code.
It works by accumulation rather than by instantaneous reading. Two electrodes sit in the exhaust stream with a gap between them; soot lands on the gap and slowly bridges it, and the rate at which resistance falls is the measurement. Then the sensor burns itself clean with an internal heater and starts again. So it reports in cycles, not continuously.
Its purpose is to police the particulate filter. A cracked or removed filter passes soot that this sensor detects, which is how a tampered or failed DPF is caught — and why it matters legally as well as mechanically.
A processor fault means the cycle arithmetic is untrusted rather than the electrode being dirty. The car cannot verify its filter is working, so it will usually illuminate and, in some markets, fail an emissions test on that basis alone.
