What to do
Mention any squeal or chirp when the engine restarts, particularly at junctions. That is belt slip and it is the commonest cause of this fault — the belt on a mild hybrid does far more work than an ordinary one, because it both starts the engine and recovers braking energy.
If the belt has been replaced, ask whether the correct part was used. These systems need a specific high-load belt, and an ordinary accessory belt works briefly then slips — which is a real and avoidable failure route.
Ask for the tensioner and the decoupler pulley to be checked, not just the belt. They absorb the torque reversals and a failed one shock-loads the belt on every restart.
Expect stop-start to switch itself off. That is the system declining to risk a slow restart, not a second fault.
What this code means
The belt-driven starter/generator is not delivering or absorbing torque the way the module expects.
Mechanical performance is the key word: the electrical side is working and the drive is not. On a mild hybrid the starter/generator replaces both the alternator and the starter motor, and it does its work through the accessory belt rather than through a gear on the flywheel.
That belt is under demands no ordinary accessory belt faces. The unit must spin an engine from rest, brake the engine to recover energy, and then assist it under acceleration — so torque runs in both directions, repeatedly, at levels an alternator never approaches. The belt, its tensioner and its decoupler pulley are consumable in a way that surprises owners.
Which makes belt slip the dominant cause, and it produces a recognisable symptom set:
- A squeal or chirp on engine restart, when torque is highest.
- Harsh or slow restarts at junctions, and stop-start disabling itself rather than risk one.
- Charging that falls short under load.
These systems use a specific high-load belt, often with a stretch-fit or a sprung tensioner matched to it. Fitting an ordinary accessory belt is a genuine failure route — it works briefly and slips soon after.
Check the decoupler pulley as well as the belt. It is designed to absorb torque reversals, and a failed one lets the belt shock-load on every restart.
