U0206: Lost Communication With Folding Top Control Module
What to do
The car drives normally, but the roof will not operate — and that is the system protecting itself. A roof that refuses to start moving is much better than one that stops halfway through.
Find out your vehicle's manual override procedure now rather than later. Most convertibles have a way to raise or lower the roof by hand, usually involving releasing the hydraulic pressure and unlatching manually. Being caught with the roof down and no way to close it is the thing worth avoiding.
Two causes account for most of these and both are worth mentioning. The wiring crosses the moving joints of the roof mechanism and flexes over its full travel every time it is used, so broken conductors there are common. And convertible drain channels block with leaves and dirt and then overflow straight into the compartment where the module and the hydraulics live — that is a maintenance job, and clearing them is often the whole repair.
If the boot or rear seat area has been damp at all, say so; that points straight at the drains.

A convertible roof is the most sensor-dependent mechanism on the vehicle, and that is what makes losing its module more consequential than losing a door module. Raising or lowering a folding top is a choreographed sequence: the windows drop, the tonneau cover opens, the latches release, the hydraulic or electric drive folds the roof through several linked joints, the cover closes, the windows rise. Every stage is confirmed by a switch or sensor before the next begins, because the alternative is a mechanism driving into itself.
With the module silent, none of that is coordinated, and the roof simply will not operate. The important part is that this is protection: a roof that stopped halfway is a far worse outcome than a roof that refuses to start.
The dominant physical cause is specific to the design and worth going to first. The wiring for a folding top crosses moving joints — between body and roof frame, and between roof panels — so it flexes over the mechanism's full travel every cycle. Conductor fatigue there is the expected finding, exactly as at the door boot but over a longer travel.
Water is the other, and a convertible has more ways to admit it than any other body style: roof seals age, drain channels at the base of the rear quarters block with debris and overflow into the very compartment the module and its hydraulics live in. Blocked convertible-top drains are a well-known cause of soaked electronics, and clearing them is maintenance rather than repair.
One safety-adjacent point deserves stating plainly. With no module, the roof cannot be power-operated — so find out what the manual override procedure is for the specific vehicle before it is needed, since being caught with a roof down in rain and no way to raise it is a genuinely bad position. Most designs have one, and it usually involves releasing hydraulic pressure and unlatching by hand.
