U0256: Lost Communication With Front Controls Interface Module A
What to do
The car drives normally. The screen may work perfectly while the buttons, knobs or controller do nothing — and that specific combination is worth reporting, because it points straight at the controls rather than at the expensive display system.
Check that you can still demist the windscreen. If the climate buttons run through this module you may not be able to adjust the demister or fan, and that makes the car unsafe in cold or wet weather. Many vehicles keep a separate physical defrost button — find out whether yours does.
Two free things to try. Look for a button or knob that is stuck, sticky or jammed with debris — one switch held down can make the car reject the whole panel, and cleaning it is the entire repair. And mention any drink that has been spilt near the controls, even a while ago. These panels sit exactly where spills land, and residue bridging the contacts is one of the commonest causes — it also explains a fault that comes and goes.

This is the controls half: the physical buttons, rotary knobs, touchpads and switch panels in the centre console and dashboard, gathered by a module that reports them to whatever acts on them.
Its failure produces a distinctive and initially baffling symptom: a screen that works perfectly and controls that do nothing. The display updates, media keeps playing, the reversing camera still appears — but turning the volume knob, pressing the climate buttons or using the console controller achieves nothing. That combination is this module, and reporting it accurately points straight here.
The consequence to check is the same one flagged at U0245: climate control. Where the physical climate buttons run through this module, losing it can leave the demister and the fan unadjustable. A windscreen that cannot be cleared is a roadworthiness problem, so establishing whether the defrost function still responds is the first practical question.
Physically, these panels are the most-touched surfaces in the vehicle after the steering wheel, and they sit horizontally under the centre console area where drinks get spilt. A liquid spill into a control panel is a leading cause here and produces exactly this — and it also explains the intermittent version, where the fault comes and goes as residue bridges contacts.
Worth eliminating first: a jammed or stuck button. A control panel with one switch held down by debris or a sticky residue can be rejected by the module as implausible, disabling the whole panel. That is a cleaning job, not a module.
