What to do

The car drives normally. The screen and its controls will both have stopped — on your vehicle they are one unit, so they go together.

Check first that you can still demist the windscreen. With no screen and no buttons you may not be able to adjust the demister or fan, and that makes the car unsafe in cold or wet weather. Most vehicles keep a separate physical defrost button for exactly this — find it before you need it.

Try a reset before anything else. These units are computers and they hang; the handbook usually gives a hard reset, and locking the car and leaving it to fully power down often works. And have the battery tested — low voltage makes these modules drop off the network exactly as a failure would, and it is a much cheaper answer.

One thing worth reporting: does the audio still play through the speakers with the panel dead? If it does, the equipment behind the panel is fine and only the interface has failed — a smaller problem. If everything is silent too, the fault is likely further back in the system.

What this code means

The combined front controls and display interface module has stopped being heard from. The distinction from U0255 and U0256 is the whole point of this code: on this vehicle the display and the controls are one unit rather than two.

That single fact changes what the symptoms can tell you, and it is worth being explicit about because the diagnostic shortcut available on split-architecture vehicles does not exist here. At U0255 and U0256 the useful evidence was the mismatch — a working screen with dead controls, or working audio with a dead screen — each pointing at one half. When both halves are one module, they fail together, so the screen goes blank and the buttons stop at the same moment and there is nothing to compare.

So the evidence has to come from elsewhere, and there are two good sources.

Does anything the module fed still work? Audio continuing through the speakers while the whole panel is dead says the modules behind it are alive and the interface is the fault. Complete silence as well suggests something further upstream — the ring network at U0237, or a shared supply.

And what else went at the same time? A single dead panel is local. A dead panel alongside other infotainment codes is a network problem, and the panel is a symptom.

The practical consequences combine both halves and the climate one is the most important: no screen and no buttons can mean no demister, so establishing that the windscreen can still be cleared is the first question. A hardware defrost button, where fitted, is what makes the vehicle usable meanwhile.

Causes combine those of U0255 and U0256 — spills into the panel, the cabling behind the dashboard, low voltage, and modules that have hung rather than failed. A reset and a battery test come first, as always on these units.
