U0330: Software Incompatibility With Tyre Pressure Monitor Module
What to do
Check your tyre pressures by hand with a gauge, and keep doing it every couple of weeks until this is fixed. That is the important part. An under-inflated tyre overheats, wears out quickly, handles badly and can fail at speed — and the system that would have warned you is not working.
Nothing is broken. This code means two computers are running software that does not belong together.
Three things cause it, and any of them may be your answer.
Was the car imported? Tyre pressure monitoring is a legal requirement with different rules in different countries, so a car brought in from elsewhere often carries another market's settings.
Has a module or instrument cluster been replaced with a part bought online? Same problem — parts from another market carry that market's rules.
Do you have a second set of wheels, for winter? If those wheels have no sensors in them and your car is set up to expect sensors, it will never be satisfied — and that is a settings question rather than a fault.
One thing to expect after it is fixed. The car has to be taught which sensor is at which corner. Until that is done it will either report nothing or report the wrong pressure against the wrong wheel — a procedure rather than a fault, and skipping it is how a "fixed" system still tells you the wrong thing.
What this code means
A module is running software that does not belong with the tyre pressure monitor module's. See U0300 for the family and U0127 for the system itself.
The safety framing outranks the diagnosis, exactly as it does at U0127: an under-inflated tyre overheats, wears out, handles badly and can fail at speed. With the monitoring unavailable, pressures need checking by hand with a gauge, regularly — and that is the whole of what a driver needs to do about this.
What makes this code more likely than most of its neighbours is that tyre pressure monitoring is regulated, and regulated differently in different places.
Two entirely different systems carry the same name. A direct system reads a radio transmitter inside each wheel and reports actual pressures. An indirect system has no sensors at all — it infers a soft tyre from wheel speed, because an under-inflated tyre has a smaller rolling radius and turns fractionally faster. Which of the two a vehicle has is configuration, and so are the warning thresholds, the relearn procedure and whether a spare is monitored.
So the routes into this code are specific and recognisable.
- An imported vehicle, whose modules carry another market's rules.
- A module or cluster replaced with one from a different market, which is very common on parts bought online.
- A vehicle switched between direct and indirect systems during a wheel change — a set of winter wheels without sensors on a car configured for direct monitoring will never satisfy it, and that is a configuration question rather than a fault.
One thing worth expecting after the software is corrected. A direct system must be taught which sensor is at which corner, and until that relearn is done the vehicle either reports nothing or reports pressures against the wrong wheels.
