Tyre Pressure Sensor

A battery-powered sensor inside each wheel reporting actual tyre pressure by radio, on vehicles with a direct monitoring system. The battery is sealed in and lasts roughly five to ten years, after which the whole sensor is replaced — so on an older car a monitoring fault is often simply age rather than damage. Vehicles with an indirect system have none of these at all: they infer a soft tyre from wheel speed, because a deflating tyre has a smaller rolling radius and turns fractionally faster, which is cheaper and cannot detect all four going down together.
