U0532: Invalid Data Received From Rain Sensing Module

What to do

The car drives normally, and this is very often not a fault in the car.

Two cheap things first. Has the windscreen been replaced recently? The sensor is bonded to the inside of the glass with an optical pad, and a bubble, a reused pad or a slightly misplaced sensor produces exactly this. That is a fitting correction, and whoever fitted the screen should sort it. And is the inside of the glass clean right in front of the sensor? It looks through that patch, and the film that builds up on the inside of a windscreen is enough to confuse it.

Automatic wipers not working is an inconvenience — use them manually. But check whether your automatic headlights still come on, because the same sensor usually drives them, and driving in poor light without lights is the part that matters.

This one is very often not a fault in the car at all, and knowing that saves a diagnostic bill.

A rain sensor is an optical device pressed against the inside of the windscreen. It shines infrared into the glass at an angle that makes it reflect internally; water on the outside changes how much comes back, and the difference is what triggers the wipers. It measures the glass as much as the rain.

Which is why the windscreen itself is the first suspect. After a screen replacement, the sensor must be re-bonded with the correct optical gel pad and pressed out flat — an air bubble, a reused pad, a slightly wrong sensor position or an aftermarket screen with different coatings all produce readings the module cannot make sense of. A rain sensor fault appearing shortly after a windscreen replacement is a fitting problem until proven otherwise.

The second cause is the everyday one: dirt on the inside of the glass, or the film that builds up there over years. The sensor looks through that film.

Automatic wipers failing is a comfort matter, but there is one safety consequence worth stating. On many vehicles the same sensor drives automatic headlights, so a car whose lights stop coming on in poor weather may be reporting this code — and that is worth attending to.
