U0534: Invalid Data Received From Side Obstacle Detection Control Module B
What to do
The car drives normally, but assume your blind-spot warning is not working — and drive as though it is not there, because it is not.
Use your mirrors and look over your shoulder before changing lanes. The system is a supplement to that habit, and this code means it has stopped being reliable. Most cars will light a warning to say so, but not all do.
Mention two things to whoever looks at it. Has the rear bumper been off, or has the car had rear-end body repair? These sensors sit behind the bumper skin and their aiming matters — a bumper refitted slightly differently, or a sensor bracket bent, is a common cause. And is there a towbar, bike rack or aftermarket fitting at the back? Metal near a radar sensor changes what it sees, and that is a configuration issue rather than a fault.

The letter is the part of this code that actually tells you something, and it is worth reading carefully.
The standard letters each instance of a repeated module — one per door, one per seat, one per window — so the letter narrows a whole-vehicle fault to one corner of the car before anybody lifts a trim panel. What the letter does not do is say which corner, because the mapping from letter to physical position is the manufacturer's to choose and it is not consistent between makes.
Only the vehicle's own documentation resolves the letter to a location. Guessing costs a stripped door card and proves nothing.
Two practical consequences. If several letters in the same family are stored together, the fault is upstream of all of them — a shared supply, a shared earth, or the bus itself — and chasing one door is wasted work. And if exactly one letter is stored, you have been handed the most valuable diagnostic fact available: the other instances are working, so everything they share is proven good.
Blind-spot monitoring usually runs on two radar sensors behind the rear bumper corners, and the letter tells you which side has stopped being trustworthy.
A radar sensor's aim is part of its calibration. It is mounted behind a plastic bumper skin at a precise angle, and the module knows what it should see when the car is moving straight. Anything that changes that geometry — a bumper refitted a few millimetres out, a bracket bent in a car park knock, rear-end accident repair — produces readings the module rejects, from a sensor that is working perfectly.
Metal near the sensor is the second cause and the most commonly missed. A towbar, a bike rack, a cycle carrier, even a heavily metallic aftermarket bumper protector reflects radar back into the sensor. A blind-spot fault that appeared when a towbar was fitted has explained itself.
The third is simple obstruction. Caked mud, snow or ice on the bumper skin over the sensor blinds it, and that is a wash rather than a repair.
The system fails quietly. Most cars warn that blind-spot monitoring is unavailable, but the failure mode people actually experience is a mirror indicator that no longer lights — which looks exactly like no car being there.
