U0536: Invalid Data Received From Lateral Acceleration Sensor Module

What to do

Expect stability control to be switched off, and drive as though the car has none — because it has. It will feel entirely normal, which is the risk.

This sensor measures sideways force, and on most cars it shares a housing with the yaw sensor. If both are reported, that usually means one loose bracket or one connector rather than two failed parts — worth saying to whoever diagnoses it.

Mention any recent interior work, seat removal or wheel alignment. The usual cause is a mounting left loose or a calibration step skipped, not a broken sensor.

What this code means

The lateral acceleration sensor module is broadcasting data that cannot be accepted as true. See U0400 for what an invalid-data code is and why the module it names is usually the messenger rather than the culprit.

Lateral acceleration is the sideways force on the car, and it is the second half of the measurement the yaw sensor at U0513 provides.

Yaw says how fast the car is rotating; lateral acceleration says how hard it is being pushed sideways. Stability control needs both, because they distinguish a car that is turning properly from one that is turning while sliding. Losing either one disables the system just as completely.

On most vehicles these two sensors live in the same housing, which has a useful diagnostic consequence: if U0513 is stored alongside this code, suspect one shared assembly, one shared connector or one shared mounting rather than two failed sensors. Two sensors failing at once is rare; one bracket working loose under both is not.

Everything at U0513 about mounting and calibration applies here unchanged — rigid attachment, correct orientation, and a stationary zero-point learn after any work that disturbed it.
