Faulty yaw rate sensor
The sensor that measures how fast the car is rotating about its vertical axis — how quickly it is actually turning. Stability control compares that against where the steering is pointed and how fast each wheel is going; when the three disagree, it decides the car is sliding and brakes individual wheels to correct it. Lose the yaw measurement and the system has no basis to act, so it switches itself off.
The sensor is usually innocent and the mounting is usually guilty. It must be rigidly attached in a known orientation, typically under a console or seat — a loose bracket, a bolt left finger-tight after interior work, or a unit refitted the wrong way round produces exactly this from a perfectly good part. Calibration is the other half: many systems need a stationary zero-point learn after suspension work, an alignment or a replacement, and skipping it leaves the module reporting a slow rotation while the car sits still.
The car drives normally with it failed, which is the danger — the difference only appears at the moment the system would have intervened.
