Engine Coolant Bypass Valve
Decides whether coolant flows through the radiator or bypasses it — the job a wax thermostat used to do, moved under the module's control.
That change matters more than it sounds. A thermostat opens at one temperature fixed when it was made, which is a compromise: an engine is most efficient hot, but a hot engine has less margin against detonation and less capacity to absorb heat under load. An electrically controlled valve lets the module pick a target by conditions — deliberately hot at light load, deliberately cooler when working hard. Coolant temperature stops being a property of the engine and becomes a control variable.
The diagnostic consequence is that an old rule of thumb has stopped being reliable. "It never warms up, so it needs a thermostat" was sound for decades; on an engine with this valve, slow warm-up is at least as likely to be the valve or its circuit. Fitting a thermostat to an engine whose temperature is controlled by something else is a real and common wasted repair.
Most failures default toward cooling, which is the safe direction — expect an engine that runs cool and warms slowly. The exception is a valve held in bypass, where coolant circulates without reaching the radiator and temperature climbs steadily; a rising gauge alongside a cabin heater blowing hotter than usual is that case, and it is one to stop for.
