P2683: Engine Coolant Bypass Valve A Control Circuit High
What to do
How urgent this is depends on which way the temperature is going, so watch the gauge.
If the engine is running cool and slow to warm up, that is the usual version and it is an inconvenience — book it in, expect a weak heater and worse economy meanwhile.
If the temperature gauge is climbing, stop. That means coolant is being routed around the engine without going through the radiator, and nothing is removing the heat. A telltale is the cabin heater blowing hotter than normal at the same time as the gauge rises. Do not carry on driving to see what happens — an overheated engine is a very different bill from a valve.
If any work has been done on the thermostat housing, water pump or hoses recently, mention it — this connector is disturbed by all of them and easily left unplugged.
What this code means
The coolant bypass valve's control circuit reads above its valid range — an open circuit, a disconnected connector, or a short to supply.

The one presentation of this family that does deserve immediate attention is a valve stuck away from the radiator, and it is worth being explicit about because it inverts the usual advice on this page. Most failures here default toward cooling and produce a cold-running engine. A valve held in the bypass position does the opposite: coolant circulates around the engine without passing through the radiator, so it heats steadily and there is nothing to stop it.
That produces the ordinary overheating picture — temperature climbing under load or in traffic, and the cabin heater unexpectedly still working, because the heater matrix is on the bypass circuit and is receiving very hot coolant. A rising temperature gauge with a heater blowing hotter than usual is that combination, and it is the point to stop rather than continue.
So the driving symptom, not the code, decides how urgent this is. Cool-running is an inconvenience to book in; a temperature gauge climbing is not.
Otherwise, an open circuit is the usual finding, and the connector is disturbed by any work on the thermostat housing, water pump or hoses.
