Intake Air Heater
An electric grid in a diesel's intake that warms incoming air for the first moments of a cold start, used instead of individual glow plugs on some engines. Draws a very large current and is switched by a heavy relay, so the failure is at least as often that relay or its cabling as the element itself. Entirely seasonal in its symptoms: nothing whatsoever in summer, then hard starting and white smoke on the first frosty morning.
