P0700 is a doorbell, not a diagnosis

CA @cargeek vor 1 Monat
P0700 does not describe a fault. It is the transmission control module ringing the engine module's doorbell: "I have stored something — turn the light on." The actual fault code lives in the transmission module, and P0700 tells you nothing about what it is.

This matters because of how basic scanners work. Many generic code readers query only the engine module — so they show P0700 and nothing else, and the trail appears to go cold. It has not: you are simply reading the wrong module. A scanner that can address the transmission module (most smartphone dongles with a capable app can) will show the real code sitting behind the doorbell — a solenoid circuit, a ratio error, a temperature sensor, a pressure fault.

So the whole tip is procedural: never diagnose P0700 itself. Read the transmission module, get the specific code, and look that one up — its page here will name actual causes and checks.

Two practical notes. If P0700 is present with no companion code even when the TCM is read, suspect the communication between modules rather than the gearbox. And if the gearbox is in limp mode — locked in one gear, harsh engagement — that is the TCM protecting the hardware while it waits for someone to come and read what it wrote down. It is being helpful. Let it: drive gently and read the code rather than clearing it and hoping.
