P0700 on its own tells you nothing about what is wrong — it only says the transmission module has stored something. Before agreeing to any work, ask what code is stored in the transmission module itself; that is the one that names the fault. If a quote for transmission repair arrives on the strength of P0700 alone, the vehicle has not finished being read.
P0700 is not a fault. It is a message. On almost every vehicle the transmission control module has no wire to the dashboard warning lamp — the engine module owns that lamp — so when the transmission module stores a fault of its own it must ask the engine module to illuminate it on its behalf. The engine module records that request, and the record is P0700. The code therefore means exactly one thing: the transmission module has something to tell you. It carries no information about what.
This is why P0700 is among the most expensively misread codes in the standard. A basic code reader talks only to the engine module, so it reports P0700 and nothing else. Read as a diagnosis, it looks like a transmission failure, and estimates for a rebuild follow. The actual fault is stored separately, in the transmission module, and reaching it needs a scan tool that can address that module — which most workshops have and most parts-shop readers do not. The stored code there may well be a speed sensor, a fluid temperature circuit or a shift solenoid, none of which is a rebuild.
One more pattern worth recognising: P0700 present with no companion code in the transmission module. That normally means the underlying fault was intermittent and has since aged out of the transmission module's memory while the request to the engine module lingered, or that codes were cleared from one module and not the other. It is not evidence of a hidden fault.
