Changan's 1.5 turbocharged four — in the CS75 and Eado.

It is Changan's own engine, developed in-house rather than licensed, and it is among the commonest turbo petrols on Chinese roads while being almost undocumented in English.

It is a conventional modern direct-injected turbo four and its faults are that family's: intake-valve carbon is expected at mileage because no fuel washes over the valves, and it presents as a rough idle and a hesitant pull-away that respond to cleaning.

The turbocharger's oil feed is what the service interval is really protecting, and on an engine this small making this much power that is the failure mode rather than routine advice. Establish the engine code rather than searching the model, because the same vehicles were sold under several names in export markets.

This page answers for the Changan JL engine codes generally, and the cars listed below run 1.0 to 2.0 litres — JL372, JL476, JL478 and JL486 among them. The description above is the 1.5 turbo. The naturally aspirated members share the family construction and not its boost, so the turbocharger paragraph is not about all of them.

Information, not instruction

CarGeek is a reference, not a service manual. Its pages are written from public sources and from what other people have found, never from a manufacturer's own service information, so they can be wrong or incomplete for your particular vehicle. Some of what they describe carries real risk: high voltage, fuel under pressure, stored energy, hot and moving parts.

Have anything you intend to act on checked by a trained person against the manufacturer's own procedure for your vehicle. Nothing here replaces that procedure.

What makes one worth reading:

  • The car — make, model, year and engine. The same fault behaves differently on each.
  • What you measured, not only what you replaced.
  • What actually fixed it — or that nothing did, which is worth knowing too.
