PSA's larger petrol four, in 1.8, 2.0 and 2.2 litre forms — the engine of the 307, 407, C4 and C5 of the 2000s, and the petrol counterpart to the DW10 diesel that shared its applications.
It is a belt-driven, port-injected sixteen-valve design, and that summary again carries the diagnostic weight: no direct injection, no turbocharger on most versions, and therefore none of the carbon or high-pressure-fuel faults that dominate the newer PSA engines. The timing belt is the item that ends them, on an interference design, with history usually unknown at this age.
What recurs is ordinary: ignition coils, the crankshaft position sensor, and — a PSA-specific note worth carrying — the electrical connectors and earth points, which corrode and produce fault patterns across unrelated systems on cars of this era. A multi-system fault set on a 307 or C4 is worth checking at the earths before it is chased as several separate problems.
