Also known as: hr18, hr18ddt, 1.8 e-tech, jogger hybrid engine

Renault's 1.8 petrol four — the combustion half of the E-Tech hybrid in the Captur and Dacia Jogger.

It is a hybrid engine and not a car engine that happens to be hybridised, which is the useful distinction: it runs the Atkinson cycle, has no starter motor and no alternator in the ordinary sense, and its idle, start and load behaviour are all decided by the hybrid controller. A complaint about any of those is a question about the system.

The gearbox behind it is the unusual part of E-Tech — a dog-clutch multi-mode transmission with no synchromesh and no torque converter — and a great many complaints attributed to the engine belong there.

It is very new and there is no settled record. What can be said comes from the design: it is chain-driven, port-injected, and its service interval exists to protect a system rather than just an engine.

Cars fitted with this engine

2 generations, across 2 makes. From the authored catalogue — an absent car means the catalogue has not reached it, not that the engine was never fitted.

Information, not instruction

CarGeek is a reference, not a service manual. Its pages are written from public sources and from what other people have found, never from a manufacturer's own service information, so they can be wrong or incomplete for your particular vehicle. Some of what they describe carries real risk: high voltage, fuel under pressure, stored energy, hot and moving parts.

Have anything you intend to act on checked by a trained person against the manufacturer's own procedure for your vehicle. Nothing here replaces that procedure.

What makes one worth reading:

  • The car — make, model, year and engine. The same fault behaves differently on each.
  • What you measured, not only what you replaced.
  • What actually fixed it — or that nothing did, which is worth knowing too.
