Mahindra's second 2.2 diesel, and a different engine from the one it replaced rather than a later revision of it — 2,184 cc against the older mHawk's 2,179, four cylinders, common-rail injection and a variable-geometry turbocharger, built at Igatpuri from 2020. Mahindra's own account of it is that it was designed and developed in-house, where the engine it succeeded was PSA's DW12 re-engineered with AVL. In the Thar, the XUV700, the Scorpio-N, the Scorpio Classic, the Bolero Neo Plus and the Thar ROXX.
⚑ The badge says mHawk on both, and on paper five cubic centimetres is all that separates them. That is not a number anybody reads off a tailgate, and Mahindra sold the two side by side — the Scorpio-N and the Scorpio Classic carry this engine while the first-generation Scorpio beside them carried the older one. The build year is the practical test: from 2020, it is this engine. See 2.2 mHawk.
⚑ This one has the exhaust aftertreatment the older engine never had. It was designed for BS6 from the start and revised again for BS6.2 in 2023, so a diesel particulate filter — and on the higher calibrations selective catalytic reduction — is part of the architecture rather than an addition to it. A fault tree written against a BS4 Scorpio is describing parts that were never fitted, and one written against this engine assumes parts the older one does not have. The asymmetry runs both ways, which is why the two are separate pages.
The output spread is wide enough that two of these are different cars. Mahindra publishes it from 130 bhp and 300 Nm in the base Thar and Scorpio-N to 182 bhp and 450 Nm in the XUV700, on one block — so a specification quoted without the variant it came from says very little here.
Boost faults point at the vane mechanism, not a wastegate — there is no wastegate. A variable-geometry turbocharger controls boost by moving the nozzle vanes, so an over- or under-boost code is asking about the vane ring, its actuator and the linkage that drives it. Soot binding the mechanism is what the architecture is prone to; a wastegate diagnosis has nowhere to go here.
