Wat te doen
Ask for the connector to be checked for coolant before any part is ordered. This sensor sits on a valve full of coolant, and a housing that weeps draws coolant into the plug — which both causes the fault and is a leak worth finding.
Mention any recent work on the cooling system. This connector is disturbed by work on the thermostat housing, the water pump and the hoses, and it is easily left unclipped.
Expect slow warm-up, a weak heater and worse economy rather than anything dramatic. With no position feedback the engine defaults to cooling itself, which is the safe direction.
If other sensor faults were found at the same time, ask whether they share a supply wire. Several sensors usually run from one reference voltage, and a single short can take all of them down at once — one repair rather than four parts.
Wat deze code betekent
The position sensor on the A coolant bypass valve is reporting a voltage below anything the circuit should be able to produce.
A signal under the valid range is an electrical statement, not a claim about the valve. These sensors are specified so that even a valve at the end of its travel keeps a margin above zero volts, precisely so the module can tell a broken circuit from a real position — so this code points at wiring, connector and supply first, and at the valve last.
Location gives it two characteristic causes. The valve and its sensor live in a plastic housing full of coolant, usually alongside the thermostat and the temperature sensor. A housing that is weeping wicks coolant along the wire strands into the connector, where it bridges the terminals — a fault that reads as electrical and is in fact a leak worth finding. That same connector is also disturbed by any work on the housing, the pump or the hoses.
The other route to a low signal is the reference supply, which several sensors usually share. A short here takes their readings down with it, so a scan showing this code alongside apparently unrelated sensor faults is often one wire rather than four parts. Read the codes together before treating them separately.
One cross-reference is worth having, because a scan tool will not give it to you. The A valve's position sensor codes sit here at P26A4 to P26AB; the B valve's are hundreds of numbers away at P2AA7 to P2AAB. A vehicle showing one of each is describing two valves, not two faults on one — an easy thing to get wrong when the titles differ by a single letter.
What the driver notices is usually very little. With no position feedback the module falls back to a safe default, which on almost all of these is flow to the radiator: slow warm-up, a weak heater and more fuel, rather than anything alarming.
