First, the reassurance that saves the most money: this is not a catalytic converter code. The wording looks almost identical to P0420, which does condemn an exhaust catalytic converter costing hundreds. This one names a catalytic coating on the radiator, at the front of the car, nowhere near the exhaust. If a quote comes back mentioning a catalytic converter, it is answering the wrong code.
The car will drive completely normally. There is nothing mechanically wrong and nothing to worry about on the road. What this affects is an emissions monitor, so it matters where emissions are tested.
Three things to establish, cheapest first:
- Has the radiator been replaced at any point? On a vehicle with this system the radiator carries the catalyst, and an ordinary uncoated one fits and cools perfectly while silently removing the equipment. That is the commonest cause of this code by a wide margin, and the fix is the correct part rather than any diagnosis.
- Is the front of the radiator blocked or covered? The coating works on contact with the air passing through it, so packed insects, leaves, a heavy film of road salt, or anything fitted across the front — a bug screen, a stone guard, an extra cooler, a winter blank — stops it working. Washing the radiator face is a real fix here and costs nothing to try.
- Is the sensor itself telling the truth? Codes P2572 to P2576 cover that circuit, and a misreporting sensor can produce this verdict on a perfectly good coating.
Only when all three are clear is the coating genuinely worn out — and at that point it is not serviceable, so the answer is the correct radiator.

The module has finished assessing the direct ozone reduction catalyst and concluded that it is no longer converting enough ozone to count. This is the verdict the five preceding codes exist to make possible.
Read the title carefully, because it is one letter away from an expensive mistake. Catalyst Efficiency Below Threshold is almost word for word the wording of P0420, the code that condemns a catalytic converter — and P0420 does mean an exhaust part costing hundreds to replace. This code has nothing to do with the exhaust system. The catalyst it names is a coating on the radiator. Nobody needs to price a catalytic converter on the strength of this code, and a quote that includes one is answering a different code.
What this equipment is is set out at P2567: a catalytic coating applied to the radiator, and sometimes the condenser or charge air cooler, which converts ground-level ozone in the air drawn through it into ordinary oxygen. It cleans air the vehicle did not dirty, it counts toward the vehicle's certified emissions position, and most owners have no idea it is fitted.
The commonest cause is not deterioration at all — it is that the coated radiator was replaced with an uncoated one. This is exactly the trap flagged at P2567, and this is the code that arrives afterwards. An ordinary radiator for the same vehicle fits perfectly, cools perfectly, costs less and is what a catalogue lookup returns. Nothing about the installation looks wrong and nothing about the car runs differently. The only sign that an emissions device was removed is this code, appearing weeks or months later once the monitor has had the conditions it needs to run. A P2577 on a car with a recent radiator is that until shown otherwise, and the repair is the correct coated part rather than anything diagnostic.
The second cause is that air is no longer reaching the coating. The conversion happens on contact, so anything between the air and the coated surface stops it as completely as a spent catalyst would: packed insects and leaf debris, a heavy film of road oil and salt, or an aftermarket addition mounted across the front — a bug screen, a stone guard, an auxiliary oil cooler, a winter grille blank, a badge panel. A gentle wash of the radiator face is a genuine repair for this code, and it is worth doing before anything is bought.
The third is honest wear. These coatings are consumed by what they process and by a decade of salt, and they are not serviceable — there is no cleaning a genuinely spent coating back into function.
The order to work through is therefore: confirm the correct radiator is fitted, clear and wash the radiator face, rule out the deterioration sensor itself through P2572–P2576, and only then accept that the coating is spent.
Nothing about the engine is wrong, and the vehicle will pass a tailpipe test perfectly while failing on this monitor — which is the whole difficulty of the code, because everything a driver can observe says the car is fine.
